My Demon

In the depths of my soul, there is something, something fierce.
It is bound, chained to the depths of my being.
Its growls torture me, its lonely cry makes my heart sob.
It strains, it tries to break free.
But...
To no avail.

When I reached a point beyond that I could stand,
I descended,
Descended so deep within my self that I could no longer feel reason.
It was then that I came face to face with it.

It was me,
In my darkest hours, in my most tormented moments.
It was me,
Tortured and twisted until I became a demon.

When I see it, we smile.
Our smiles are broad,
Our smiles are genuine,
For the first time in what seems like forever.

I do what no sane person would do:
I released the demon that was me.
We stood apart for a moment, just looking at each other.
Then, she embraced me,
Thanked me for granting her wish.
I simply smile and nod, placing a affectionate kiss on her jaw.

And she picked up the chains and chained me in her place.
She looked at me, to make sure I had no regrets.
With a caress to my own jaw,
She ascended the depths of my soul,
Now her soul.

I am no more. I am her inner light,
I am the light inside the demon that once was me.
